One Month Out: Where Does the USMNT Stand?
The 2026 World Cup will officially commence this June. The United States is sharing hosting duties with Canada and Mexico, with Canada hosting the Men's edition for the first time. This World Cup will be historic, featuring 48 teams, the largest number ever, and the longest competition duration. With the US hosting the World Cup for the first time in over 30 years, many questions surround the team as they head into their opening game, such as whether they are capable of making a deep run.
I'll be honest, I haven't been following the USMNT closely since they crashed out of the Copa America in 2024, and when Pochettino was announced as the new head coach. But since we are only one month away from the competition, and I do plan on following the game closely, I want to know where the USMNT stands and if they make history. Now, I don't anticipate them winning the World Cup or making a final appearance, but I do hope they can match or surpass their 2002 World Cup run.
1. Consistency
If you examine the USMNT performance since the last time they hosted the World Cup there are some high points and low points. I think about their 2002 World Cup and their deep run during the 2009 Confederations Cup where they upset Spain and made it to the final where they ultimately loss to Brazil. But then there was the 2018–the failure to qualify for the World Cup. I feel like when it comes to the USMNT you just don't know what you are going to get. USMNT has lost to teams, that on paper, they should've won or have shown that they are willing to fight it out against the very best. I want to see the USMNT fight it out. While I don't expect them lifting the trophy, I don't want them to exit the tournament without roughing it out against the top teams.
2. The Golden Generation
The new generation of players are often labled as the golden generation. We have more players playing in the top clubs in Europe than previous generations had. Yet, they have not produce a golden moment that surpass what other generations had. There will be other World Cups that these players will play in, but none will be at home. This is an opportunity of a lifetime. Will this generation of talent be up for the task?
3. The what if??
What if the USMNT make it to the quaterfinals like they did in 2002? What if they go further? For the past couple of World Cup cycles, the round of 16 has been their ceiling. Being the host team there are some pressure that comes to it. They are expectations that the USMNT should advance out of their group. For the first time ever, there will be a round of 32. The competition will be deeper, with games being a week apart. It is going to be a World Cup like no other. If the USMNT go father, what does this mean to growth of soccer in the USA?
I am looking forward to watching the World Cup this summer. It is my favorite sporting event that I look forward every four years. I hope the USMNT can shock the world this summer. I want to root for them, but I need to be given a reason to.
